Obituary

Ms. Nellie Mae Frances Clark, 94, departed this life on Wednesday, August 11, 2021.

Nellie was born on March 31, 1927 in Glendale, KY as the second oldest of five children born to the late James Sydney Phillips and Mary R. Brashear. Nellie professed her love for Christ and was baptized at a young age.

Nellie attended Booker T. Washington in Shelbyville, IN. In 1946, Nellie gave birth to her one & only child, Larry Dean Smith with Glenn Smith. Larry became the center of her world and she dedicated her life to raising him in the admonition of the Lord. Nellie worked various housekeeping jobs in Shelbyville before moving to Indianapolis in 1961 where she worked for Fort Benjamin Harrison, moving quickly into a leadership role for clerks/typists.

On September 23, 1967, Nellie married Rev. Dr. T.A. Clark Sr. in Bloomington, IL. In 1969, the couple moved to Chicago where they were installed as Pastor and First Lady of Greater Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. As First Lady, Nellie sang in the choir, played the piano, led children's ministry, and was a devoted servant of Christ and mother to all of the Greater Galilee church family. Nellie also worked full-time in addition to mothering the church including as secretary to the Dean of Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago until she retired.

Some of Nellie's past time favorites were going fishing, traveling the United States, savoring delicious meals and becoming acquainted with every shopping center, mall or grocery store she could find before they closed. Nellie was the ultimate people person. She never met a stranger, could talk for hours and was well loved by all who met her. One of Nellie's favorite topics of discussion were her grandchildren. She doted on their every move and delighted in telling anyone that listened about their antics and accomplishments alike. Most importantly, Nellie was a Christian and had a personal relationship with Jesus.

Nellie is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Morgan; son, Larry (Beth) Smith; granddaughters, Tammara (Corey) Day, Jean (Charlie) Smith, Lynn (William) Kinslow; 6 great grandchildren, Christana (Drew) Lawson, Andrew (Camila) Day, Jye Johnson, Jaylen Johnson, Kamryn Smith and Kennedy Smith and 6 great great grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Maxine Phillips; brothers James Phillips and Raymond Phillips.
